It is often said that young people are apathetic toward the political process and its candidates, and campaigns such as MTV's Rock the Vote were created to try and change the situation.

A group of students known as the Pottsville Area Teenage Republicans set out to prove that claim wrong and show that those not even old enough to vote are ready and willing to become involved in the political process.

Since it was founded earlier this year, the organization has volunteered for candidates on the city's November GOP ticket.

The group's chairman, Scott R. Thomas, 15, of Pottsville, said the organization currently has about 20 members and was created from humble beginnings this past March.

"We were searching the Web and we saw that there was a national website for teenage republicans," he said. "We thought it would be a good idea to have something local to support our candidates and get more involved with the races."

Once registering with the National Teenage Republicans, the group e-mailed Republican senators and governors. They received about a dozen congratulatory response letters from politicians, including U.S. Sens. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and John S. McCain, R-Ariz.

Thomas said the group's activities so far included going door-to-door campaigning during the 2005 primary election in May. They also attended recent Pottsville City Council meetings with city mayoral candidate Beth Pillus and are also planning to attend Schuylkill County Commissioners meetings.

"We wanted to get out there and meet everybody and let them know we are here to help them," he said.

Group members are also planning a trip to Harrisburg in August to meet with state Reps. Bob Allen, R-125, and David G. Argall, R-124, and state Sen. James J. Rhoades, R-29, but Thomas said the final details of the trip have not yet been determined.

Rob A. DeColli, 15, the group's secretary, said Rhoades gave the organization funding for t-shirts, which he said they will purchase soon.

DeColli said the group has also been working closely with Pillus, who is also a teacher at Pottsville's John S. Clarke Elementary Center.

"A lot of people in the group know her because they had her as a teacher in the elementary school, so we are happy to help her out," he said. "It has been very interesting to follow her and find out about things like the city's sewer plans."

Thomas said the group has been in contact with the Schuylkill County Young Republicans, but the two are not officially affiliated.

"When we turn 18, our members will join them, but until then we are separate," he said.

As November's general election draws closer, Thomas said the group will become more involved with Pillus and Republican city council candidates David C. Eckert and John J. Howells, and also with District Attorney Frank R. Cori and sheriff candidate Joseph J. Kavanaugh.

Thomas said the group will also look to recruit more members to help with campaigning.

"Starting in August, we will be having membership meetings and anyone who wants to join the group can come and sign up," he said.

While he will spend his free time helping the candidates this fall, DeColli said he has no aspirations to become a politician himself.

"I grew up around politics because my grandfather is one of those kind of guys who screams at the TV and gets involved with things," he said. "But I'm not the guy to get in it, I'm just here to support it."

More than just comrades for the city's GOP ticket, DeColli said nearly all of the Teenage Republicans were friends before starting the group.

"We all like to hang out with each other, and this gives us a way to help the candidates and the Republican party at the same time," he said.

Thomas said the group is not deterred by the fact that none of them will be able to vote for the candidates they are helping.

"It doesn't bother us because even though we can't vote, we can still help to influence others," he said.
