Under the new label Schuylkill County Teenage Republicans, or TARS, the group hopes to extend its capabilities to help Republican candidates win local, state and national elections.
“We encouraged political activism in Pottsville, and now we want to extend to a larger fan base of sorts,” said TARS Chairman Scott R. Thomas, 16, of Pottsville. “Now more teens can join and become politically active.”
Thomas said the group is planning to help with a number of campaigns.
“We want to keep the Pennsylvania House in Republican hands, and keep (U.S.) Senator (Rick) Santorum in office,” Thomas said.
Thomas said the group formed more than one year ago and meets once or twice a month, depending on the amount of work.
There are currently 20 members from the Pottsville area that meet at Republican headquarters on Centre Street.
The goal of the group is to encourage political awareness in youths between the ages of 12 to 18.
Several Republican candidates expressed enthusiasm regarding the organization.
“I think it is really great that they are taking this countywide,” said county Controller Gary Hornberger, Republican candidate for the 125th Legislative District.
“I can’t think of a better way for our young people to learn about politics and our system of government than getting them involved in the campaign.”
Robert Heffner, Pottsville, spoke on behalf of Michael C. Cadau, Republican candidate in the 123rd District.
“Unfortunately, Mike Cadau cannot be here but he offers congratulations to TARs for going countywide,” Heffner said. “He is looking forward to working with TARS as the campaign progresses.”
Daniel L. Daub, chairman of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee, commended the leadership of the Pottsville Area Teenage Republicans on their announcement of their intent to expand in a written statement.
“By embracing the idea of inclusion and expanding their ranks to all areas of the county, I am confident that this team of talented, dedicated young people will help build our Republican party for many years to come. This organization has the full support, endorsement and encouragement of the Schuylkill County Republican Party.”
The officers and members of TARS have already taken on roles in a number of county races.
“This is the future of government, right here,” Thomas said about his fellow members.
